Total number: 20 \o/
Total word count: 49008
Ship/character breakdown: 2 m/m, 2 f/m, 16 gen. No yuri/femslash fic this year (well, there's a mention of it in Tomorrow is a Mystery, but the other woman isn't even named, so), but I've devoted plenty of words to that in origfic. Plus one f/genderless computer origfic for an exchange.

Specifics:
Best/worst title? I like 'Tomorrow is a Mystery' best for the rhythm of it, but also 'Neon Lights and City Sights', and 'Dessert Properly Prepared' works so nicely with the story. Overall I think I did a pretty good job of choosing titles this year. Worst, 'Experimental' for being plain, but I don't think it's bad.

Best/worst summary? For best, I'm torn between "Kyoshi and her training. Four nations, four elements, and four ideas she absorbed." (Endure as Long as Life) and "Once upon a time, there was a happy little neuron." (The Stirring Tale....) as things I would click on first. Worst... maybe "Four times Phichit helped Yuuri when he cried - from joy or sadness - and one time he couldn't." (Give Me Up to Tears), which I don't think is bad, exactly - it's what it says on the tin - but it stands out even next to the other 4/5 + 1 fic I have posted. "Sometimes Nate stopped and thought too much about the city before the War, and all Nick could do was wait the moments out." (Neon Lights and City Sights) also bothers me for some reason but I can't figure out why.

Best/worst first line? Best, it's hard to choose. "The future is another country" from Tomorrow is a Mystery, maybe. Worst, "William, as might be expected, was not one for cooking" from A Skillet From a Helm, bleh.

Best/worst last line? I don't think any of them are more particularly brilliant or terrible than any of the others this year. If I had to pick one I guess I'd go with "When he saw the new arrangement, he didn't think of his cold-eyed grandfather, or his angry father; he thought of how warm it looked, ready for conferences late into the night, and how brightly the many lanterns lit the room." as one I like for being cozy (from They Enter Into All Things).

General questions:
Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted? I aimed to post 12 and hit 20!

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year? I didn't expect to write fairytale fic, but the prompt in the Trick or Treat requests was just so enticing the story practically wrote itself. Also, while I loved Haibane Renmei, it's such a beautiful show, it never inspired me to write anything, and it's been a while since I watched it. I think I added it to my Parallels offers on a whim or to make sure I matched with someone, but that worked out nicely.

What's your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest. Oh, geez. How do I choose? I loved the concept in Walk the Ice Unseen, even if I'm not sure how well I executed it in text. I'm pretty proud of my other two YOI fics. I very much like Tomorrow is a Mystery, and also Endure as Long as Life partially because element motifs + Kyoshi = yes please for my brain.

Okay, NOW your most popular story. On AO3, Break the Walls by a long ways by any measure. It's at #2 for most hits for all of my stories already, and I expect it will overtake my Bad Bang story from 2014. Runner up is Give Me Up to Tears. On ff.net, Give Me Up to Tears is the winner again, followed by Finer Than the Silk of the Floss, which is actually more popular there than on AO3.

Story most underappreciated by the universe? I'd say 'all of my Betrayal in Antara fic' but considering that's such an obscure game, that seems like cheating. I'll go with 'Walk the Ice Unseen', then; I dunno if the summary is bad - I did have a hard time writing one - or if the concept just doesn't appeal to anyone else but me. But I really liked the concept, so oh, well.

Story that could have been better? A Skillet From a Helm. I think the concept is cute but the writing is too clunky.

Sexiest story? Break the Walls! I didn't write anything else explicit, but I'd choose Finer Than the Silk of the Floss as the runner-up, since I have a Thing for people taking care of another person's hair.

Saddest story? Passing the Night, a story about grief and mourning that made me really sad to write it. Runner-up is Give Me Up to Tears, which also made me feel bad while writing it. Why so sad and anxious, Yuuri.

Most fun? Definitely By Virtue of Its Crust, and it was a lot of fun coming up with different ways for the Sole Survivor to try and destroy the damn Port-A-Diner in her quest for what looks like the last pie in the wasteland. I think The Stirring Tale of the Friendship Between an Astrocyte and a Neuron is fun, too, but I am also a neuroscience geek so I am biased here.

Story with single sweetest moment? Give Me Up to Tears, though I'm not sure what I would choose for the actual moment.

Hardest story to write? Break the Walls; I'm not used to writing smut at all, so it came out very slowly. It wasn't 'hard' to write in terms of difficulty coming up with it, though, I had a very visual image of what I wanted to happen and it played out naturally. The one that gave me the most plot trouble was Mirror Illusion; I had trouble with getting a solid idea of what to write.

Easiest/most fun story to write? Most fun to write was probably Between Magic and Camouflage because it's about cosplaying and I am a costuming geek. All the fun of planning a cosplay without having to actually buy fabric and sew it! Dessert Properly Prepared came out very easily and I also really enjoyed writing Endure as Long as Life. I've written several Kyoshi-centric stories and I just like getting into her head and imagining what her life could have been.

Did any stories shift your perceptions of the characters? Tomorrow is a Mystery; I rewatched the movie very carefully to try and get a handle on her personality and what she might like and notice about the future.

Most overdue story? By Virtue of Its Crust was posted on the Fallout kink meme at the end of December last year.

Did you take any writing risks this year? I wrote an explicit story for a crack pairing based off of a single screenshot. Um, other than that, does OC-centric worldbuilding or OC-dependent backstory count as a 'risk'? I don't mind a decent OC and I love worldbuilding stories that use them (I still remember this brilliant Yuu-yan archer story I read years and years ago) but I think a lot of people are wary of them or uninterested. On a different note, writing a story about grief was kind of a personal risk; I have issues with death that have led to panic attacks before, but thankfully I didn't seem to trigger them while writing it.

What are your fic writing goals for next year? First, how did I do with last year's goals?
Post 12 stories for 12 months: done
Write more variety, not in terms of fandoms but in more shipfic, darker stuff, etc: done

Next year's goals: Cross-post closer to author reveals (I still have a few things from Trick or Treat that need to be crossposted; I'm waiting until after the New Year to do so). Also, post more of the stuff that's been languishing in folders and waiting for another look-over. I'd like to post at least 18 things altogether.

Write more shipfic; it's fun, and it scratches a different kind of itch than the character-exploration stuff I did a lot of this year. Enjoy writing in an active fandom for once. Finish that Betrayal in Antara OT3 soulmark AU - I just need to figure out how to end it at this point. Write something over 10k besides the soulmark AU. Get better at estimating end wordcount, as lately everything is ending up three or four times longer than I thought it would be.

I was about to write that I wanted to focus less on exchanges this year in favor of writing more stuff I want to write for myself, before I realized that I still want to sign up for everything I did last year if they run again and I have time, so. Also looking forward to trying a non-exchange event with Yuri on Ice week; I don't go on tumblr so I never hear about these things before they're over, when they're even in my fandoms.

A bit of a longshot, here, but depending on how my Japanese improves this year, it would be nice if I could write something very short in Japanese. The equivalent of a drabble. What's the Japanese equivalent of a drabble?

And I have a lot to do in the realm of original writing, but the majority of what I wrote this year was already original, including 100k on that historical fantasy f/f story I still need to finish. Sigh.
