A Reckoning of Swords 25-29

Whew, that's a lot of swords though it doesn't feel like I've done much? Basically the cold is destroying my energy levels. So what I've been doing is going through old notes. I told myself I was 'sorting' them but there has been no actual sorting. Shortly, I'm just going to have to find a box to toss them all in because they're literally taking up the whole sofa. I can't even explain what I'm looking for, aside from one particular list I've mostly found but I just... IDEK how I'd sort them. I should probably give up on organization and just pick things up and work on them, lol. My plans for a drabble six years ago are not terribly important at this point; if the idea or the drabble come back around independently and I do something different that's fine. (It's not like I've never written different things for the same idea anyway. Whatever!)

I did get a tiny bit more done with the Best Moves/NaNo 2003 re-write. At the moment I'm trying to deal with a patch of exposition to make it feel a little more natural. (And then overall figure out how to balance out the plot and subplot and just make everyone feel a little more rounded.)

I've also figured out what to do with friend's cameo character. He can basically be slid entirely out of the narrative and replaced with a character who can impact things a bit more. I feel pretty good about this.

+ Yesterday was rough. Just walking around vibrating, had a cry in the storage room, absolutely hated the feel of washing my hands. Extremely over-stimulated. People being around all the time, and complete disruption of routines will do that eventually, which I did not appreciate learning. Thankfully I got a full nights sleep after I dozed off - got a sleeping pill from my dad to help out, still my brain was trying to scrabble back awake several times before I succeeded.

Fishery is somewhat more decent yoday, god I hope that holds up. January is supposed to be prime fishing season 😤

+ Today is Festivids Go Live Day \o/ hopefully it opens up earlier in the day for me, I absolutely cannot allow myself shiny new vids late in the evening. I just get too worked up.

+ Discovered I'd left some small fandom icons behind at [community profile] forsquares, including Borgen, so I have one more masterpost to put up before I move on to re-uploading the existing [community profile] spankulert icon posts to Dreamwidth. Those random black images are really starting to piss me off.

+ Also toying with the idea of fiddling with my journal layout. Gotta admit I'm too old for the piddly font size at this point, le sigh. Could be better for mobile as well.

+ Decided that yes, I will make myself a mood theme when I get home, thank you very much. Probably IWTV, and just the top/base moods, as I'd like to incorporate s3 as well. Making gifs is absolutely not in my wheelhouse, but imma give it my all.

+ Ugh a mail about Susanne Sundfør concert happening when I'll be at sea. I am having a sulk about it. Raye is performing in Oslo a few days before I get home. My bad concert luck is not letting up boo.

The few notes I took during my not-really-pacing-check aren't taking as long as the previous chunky edits to integrate (THANK GOD), which means I'm also speed-running through my Having Feelings About The Manuscript cycle... *sigh* I was taking a few notes for a post as I went (seeing how much better it is than before! happy feelings!) but I've already moved on from happy to things to be sad/disappointed about.

Audience: "Wow, you're about 70% into the manuscript and thinking it's bad? Is this where we're supposed to act surprised???"

Like, it does help to know that I literally go through this cycle every time whether writing or editing, but the feelings are still being felt and kind of suck regardless T_T

Here's what the voice at the back of my mind says:

You're enjoying the story because you can see that it's better "than before" but that doesn't mean it's good. It'll probably still look like baby's crappy first draft to someone coming in fresh. You've also had over 2 years to get used to the worst flaws, the ones that can't be fixed because they are load-bearing in the story.

Anyway!

As always the first couple of days were a bit rough while I adjusted to a new way of doing things. I've landed on: I take the written down squiggled notes I made and add them as comments to my Scrivener file (unless they're super straightforward/require 0 thinking, then I just make the change). Then I go through these comments scene by scene, deleting them as I integrate the feedback. In my BuJo I have many many little boxes for every scene that I can tick when I'm done :D Each chapter is about 4-6 scenes so it helps with giving a sense of progress and make the process feel a bit less overwhelming. I do love my ticky boxes.

Vaguely considering adding chapter titles because a few chapters would really benefit, but some others are more awkward and I don't know that I really want to have to find 10+ more titles /o\

I'm still writing ficlets here and there as a pressure valve from editing :D However, there's a mindset thing I'm noticing that I don't like at all:

Me about to write fic: "This should be FUN! If it's not FUN, then you failed!! :D"
Me about to write origfic: "This should be GOOD! If it's not GOOD, then you failed!! D:"

I don't like that. It should all be fun, like, I should always slip into writing mode with a lighter spirit. I don't want my own worlds to feel like a chore, full of associated pressure. So, something I'll definitely want to address, though I'm not too sure how yet.

But this has too much ice for me. They warned us they couldn't get all the ice off. Let it be known NO ice/snow had been removed from the handicapped lot in and in front of the building was a literal rink. Another coworker was out and he walked in with me in case I couldn't do it (No issues0

The heaters are broken so the rooms are icy.

When I left at five all the feet had taken off the snow. It was a bare ice floe. I could barely walk to the car. I texted my coworker and said end your lab. You'll never make it in the dark. I called off for tomorrow. I missed Wednesday's lab might as well miss both.

That'll get me down to Gallipolis earlier so I can hit the library and lunch before my mammogram.

1. Had a nice lunch at DCA today. The lunar new year menu this year has been all hits so far. Can't wait to try more.

2. Carla arrived home safely last night. A little bit of annoyance at the airport as the terminal that is usually used for American Airlines is completely closed off due to construction, so they have to route the planes to adjoining terminals. Usually they are doing it to the next one over, but this time apparently there was no room, so they sent it two terminals down, which is not only a longer walk, that is the international terminal, so it's much more of a maze to get out of. But she is home now, yay.

3. I went into the office today after we went down to Disneyland, but am planning to work from home again tomorrow.

4. Look at this little Jasper face!

I got tagged into this on Tumblr but might as well give you lot a chance too.

Here's a list of all the WIPS I've touched in the last three years, listed by working title. The deal is that I write 100 words for every vote (no deadline.)

No, you don't get to ask for any more info, though I have talked about some of them before. The oldest one is about twenty-five; the newest was started for yuletide this year. There are 25 different fandoms involved, which is definitely part of the problem, yes.

Challenge #14

In your own space, create a promo and/or rec list for someone new to a fandom. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it and include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

You've probably heard of Top Gun at this point. Yes, you - the generic you, the one reading this post right now. I'd be more surprised if it hasn't come up at this point, given the cultural footprint the movies hold, to the point that the first one was considered significant enough to be included in the Library of Congress' National Film Registry and the second one played in movie theaters for over six months in a time when that's practically unthinkable because people kept buying tickets. But maybe you haven't seen it. No shame in that. Maybe you know it's not for you. I can't speak to your tastes. Then again, maybe you're not sure. Maybe you need some enticement. Maybe you need to be told that it's more or less American live-action anime, down to having beach episodes. Maybe you need more than that.

Might I offer a homoerotic volleyball montage, voted "best movie scene" three years in a row by Suck magazine, a fact that made the director tremendously proud?

What about Val Kilmer snapping his teeth at Tom Cruise, a moment he confirmed was improvised?

How about one actor sneaking porn onto set and playing it during a scene, creating the conditions for someone to say "This gives me a hard on" and for someone else to respond "Don't tease me" and for that moment to be included in the final cut?

Were you aware that the first movie's aesthetic was largely inspired by Bruce Weber, noted gay photographer?

How about that for all its endorsement by the US military, it manages to be astonishingly gay by 1986 and contemporary standards, with Kilmer himself being the first Iceman/Maverick shipper?

Would it please you to know that between Top Gun Maverick and the Mission Impossible movies, combined with all the cumulative explosions from his movies, Tom Cruise qualifies as a Dekahelen?

Possibly you'd enjoy knowing that the sequel is a surprisingly somber meditation on aging, loss, regret, and reconciliation in addition to all the thrills of the practical stuntwork?

Or that together, both movies total just over four hours' runtime so it's not even a big commitment, and that all four of those hours are full of beautifully composed scenes and shots?

Maybe you've made up your mind a while ago. I'm cool with that. But if you haven't and you're willing to give it a shot, drop me a line and I can hook you up, no streaming services required.

Create a promo and/or rec list for someone new to a fandom

Well, I was enthusing about The Count of Monte Cristo the other day, so I shall expand on that a bit. (Also see 2019 post here.

It's a French novel (original title: Le Comte de Monte Cristo) by Alexandre Dumas (père), first published in serial form from 1844-46 and then as a complete novel in 1846. (There were two Alexandre Dumas, father and son. The father is most famous for The Three Musketeers and the son is most famous for The Lady of the Camellias.)

The first part of the book stars too-good-to-be-true sailor Edmond Dantès, who is framed for a crime of which he is, obviously, innocent, and imprisoned in an island prison just outside Marseille. There he encounters the Abbé Faria, who knows where to find some hidden treasure on another island, tiny Monte Cristo, if only he could get free... Well, he can't, but Edmond is younger and stronger and has a much better chance.

The rest of the book follows the consequences - for Edmond (who has restyled himself as Count of Monte Cristo), and for the three men who stitched him up, and for their nearest and dearest. (Edmond has been in prison for a while, and they've all done rather well for themselves - implausibly so, in some cases.) They take a while to work themselves out, but they're very satisfying even as they're somewhat horrifying. It's revenge with an unlimited budget, and then having to come to terms with what that does to a person. (If absolute power corrupts absolutely, then unlimited revenge... erm. Anyway.)

I love the melodrama. I love the Gothic vibe. I love the canon lesbians (Eugénie, the daughter of one of the three villains and an impoverished friend who sings opera with her) who get a happy ending under their own author's nose. I love the background detail, Parisian society, the faint odour of decadence.

Warnings: the dodgy opinions you'd expect for 1846. Alexandre Dumas was in fact Black, but this doesn't stop him going unfortunately Orientalist in places.

Also note that it's very long - about 1200 pages in my edition. This is a plus for me: I read it in difficult times and by the time I get to the end something will have changed somewhere. It's worth being careful about the translation, as some of the older ones are also bowdlerisations and lose vital Eugénie bits. Which is a travesty.

In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts.

1) Comments on AO3! I also enjoy remixes and fanart based on stuff I've written -  https://archiveofourown.org/users/dancesontrains/works (note tags and warnings, some are archive-locked due to content).

2) Or if you have moneys, Steam wishlist with video games here - https://store.steampowered.com/wishlist/profiles/76561198204034817/ Mostly smaller ones.

3) This is more serious, but please don't buy Harry Potter branded anything. I don't personally care if you pirate the works or make fannish stuff, but JKR doesn't deserve another penny for her anti-trans activities. Save your money.

Also there are many trans people in the UK and elsewhere, please don't try to get some sort of verbal ~absolution for interacting with HP from any of us. It's annoying to say the least.

I seem to be the respository for old papers in various lines of descent. None of them worth a damn, except their voices are such a joy to "hear". But on recent visit my daughter asked for the little iron box containing her great-grandfather's letters from WW I.

Jack Murray was a typical nineteen year old and it comes across so clearly. He joined the army early on, and was shipped from CA to Florida to base camp. There, they went around asking if anyone was familiar with automobiles. He said he fooled around with them, as many Los Angeles boys did.

They yanked him out of infantry and put him in the nascent motor pool, before shipping them off to France. The ship journey, their arrival in France, and the rapid development of Motor Transport is fascinating to read from his ground-level perspective. After the war, he was one of the last to leave France, as he was vital for the transport system.

My daughter commended on how very, very earnest he was about his longing to marry Great Granny (then seventeen or eighteen) RIGHT NOW. Also, she commented on the slang of the day. Everything was a peach. A peach of a car, a peach of a trip, a peach of a meal. She was a peach of a girl!

Next Ihope she wants to read the letters of a great-great grandfather through her grandfather's line--these beautifully written copperplate letters from California right after the gold rush, through a quake, and a riot . . .
