Magic flutes and magic spells

I brought up the Onmyouji movies last weekend at con.txt's Untamed panel - since someone mentioned the flute magic and I also strongly remembered that aspect of the movies - and got a hankering to rewatch them. So I did! Z and I watched the second one yesterday and I rewatched the first one by myself today.

• I still ship Seimei/Hiromasa soooo much, oh my gosh. There is crying over deathly injuries and cradling and 'I couldn't bear to lose you' 'That goes for me as well' and going into danger together and they are great.


• I still love the Heian era and its stupid aesthetics *_*


• The music is so great. There's a reason I listen to the soundtrack all the time. Makes great writing music.


• Costuming! Every once in a while I think of taking that costuming in historical Japanese films panel I did and writing it up into meta, and I would have a lot to add to the Onmyouji section.


• I actually understood quite a lot of the dialog without the subtitles :) Maybe I should rewatch again with them turned off... Some of the simpler dialog I remember understanding the first time I saw them and being so excited about them, aha.


• Mansai Nomura especially moves so well in the costumes and seems quite natural in them. I guess from his kyogen experience? And apparently he was put in charge of the Olympic opening ceremonies :o You know, should they happen.


• I am probably going to make a gifset of Seimei's dancing in the ending vs. Yuzu's program b/c why not.


• I found myself amused by the fact that both these mains and those of The Untamed are a cooler-headed man usually seen in white and/or blue, and a man usually seen in black who plays a magical flute. Both canons also have magic paper-man talismans, too - though Seimei's are not as adorable as Wei Wuxian's and are used for summoning shikigami/as illusions. (This is about where the similarities end, though.)


• I kind of want to make a vid splicing together Hiromasa's flute playing with Wei Wuxian's because why not. I don't suppose anyone knows of other movies featuring attractive east-Asian men playing magical flutes to add?

Might be time to go reread some of the fic now. For a small fandom, I remember most of the fic being really good.
