I have no idea if it's a common opinion or not - I just read an article last year, around the Olympics, where they asked a (probably not very random) assortment of ballet dancers what they thought of figure skating. Some of them were really into it, others said that there was too much athletics and not enough artistry for them. I do remember that several of them mentioned finding the intense competition part strange or stressful to watch.
