Chill is creeping up
Sep. 30th, 2021 11:32 pmMy mom sent me a box of moon cakes for the Mid-Autumn Festival :) I loooove moon cakes - used to buy these delicious lotus-paste ones from the store at home - but haven't been able to get to the Asian grocery here for forever, so that was a great surprise. I gave one to Z and ate a couple on the day of the festival, but the rest got nommed whenever lol.
Things I have been waiting on in the mail: my new ID and my check for data analysis work. Eventually, the people who hired me just resent the check with tracking. (They have now hired me again! And this time paid me online ahead of time before the government shutdown. Finished the main analysis and now working on the report.) I need to call the DMV about my still-missing ID. My passport needs renewing - not that I'm going anywhere anytime soon, but you know, it takes a while - but I can't do that when it's my only valid ID.
I'm on chapter 52/54 of Genji. The (non-)ending approaches! I am v. suspicious of what happened with Ukifune, but I also spent pages wanting to shake her and tell her to pick a fucking lover. It's the Heian era, obviously you can't just talk it out! There's also some description of peeking in on ladies wearing little but translucent gauze shifts, which comes across as pretty hot but is a bit of a weird transition from the mourning.
So far in Skate Boys: the main character is coming back from an injury and his coach is making him do figures. I am in the middle of a flashback to him watching last Nationals at a sports bar with a girl he knows (I suspect his future love interest) who is a fan of skating but not super knowledgeable, and mentally defending how Nationals isn't just about picking the Worlds team, but for people like him, making it and being able to compete in front of such a crowd is an accomplishment. Enjoying it so far.
On Saturday, I went with R to the city to help him with a photoshoot in someone's apartment and then on the streets. Apparently people rent these things out for parties and photographers? I guess it beats doing AirB&B. Aside from a tense moment where we almost got locked out on the patio with the model (the key worked the first time!!), it was fun, although exhausting. Sometimes I think the pandemic has lowered my ability to deal with very stimulating situations like crowded streets lining honking cars, but I have never been a fan of this city anyway. Kyoto and Oslo and DC are all so much more pleasant. At least we got some very nice udon for dinner, and from what I saw of the photos, they look fantastic.
(And in the middle of the shoot, I checked my phone and found ZHENYA ALEGRIA IN COSTUME which was amazing even muted. Purple! Tutu! Cartwheel! That smile before she does the arm thingy!!! I couldn't sleep when I got home, so I stayed up and giffed it instead.)
Spent most of Sunday and Monday helping Z with some thesis stuff and talking him down from the ledge over stress, but we also tried out the new ramen place that just opened here. I really liked it; they have a build-you-own option, so I can eat more than one ramen on the menu. Their noodles are not as good as the other place, but the soup stock is much more rich and not overwhelmingly salty. Plus they don't charge extra for a marinated egg. Thumbs up from me :)
